Tour description

The basic idea is The Voyage – exploring and experiencing the coast, the ocean, the fjords and the ever changing landscape from the comfort of a small ship. Then of course, stopping along the way, for lunch and special sights. Night will be spent at the most interesting and delightful hotel, in itself an experience.

Utvaer, Norway's westernmost point

In the morning of the first day you will be met by your guide and the captain on board the “MS Tollesund” in the historic centre of Bergen. From here we sail leisurely up coast through the archipelago and into the longest and deepest fjord in the world – the majestic Sognefjord. Maps, binoculars, fishing gear, water/soft drinks/coffee/tea and snacks are free of charge and will be available on board. Other beverages will be for sale. En route we stop at Utvaer, a small island situated where the fjord meets the Norwegian Sea. Utvaer is in fact Norway's westernmost point! This is where we stop for lunch, and your private guide will take you on a walking tour of the island as well as into the old lighthouse. The menu of the day is white and red fish netted the same morning, as well as other local specialities. And of course, fishing equipment will be available should you wish to have a go at it yourself.

Findebotten farm

After lunch we sail due east into the fjord proper, then eventually turning south into one of the remote sidefjords, the narrow and gorgeous Finnafjord, at the end of which is a small settlement – only accessible by boat. No roads, no traffic, no television… And here, in this wild and wonderfully tranquil back of the beyond is where we stay the night. The farm was abandoned in the 1960’s but reinhabited a few years ago by descendants from Oslo. They have respectfully restored the place and transformed the old barn into a small hotel with all modern amenities – and, we may add, an excellent kitchen. We will have the place to ourselves and before or after dinner you may want to go for a hike, do a bit of fishing or just sit outside with a glass of wine enjoying the magnificent view and listening to what can best be described as the deafening silence. And if lucky, you may even spot one of the eagles nesting in the steep mountainsides above the farm.

After a hearty breakfast the next morning we leave for the main fjord. Then turning north into the beautiful Fjærlandsfjord towards Jostedalsbreen, the largest glacier in continental Europe. As we get nearer we can see the white icecap glimmering in the distance. We anchor in the small village of Fjærland. Here we find one of the few remaining original Norwegian tourist hotels, built in the early 1890’s to cater for the influx of English tourists, lords and the like. In this historic building all is set for lunch. And an excellent one to boot! Fjaerland is curiously enough also a so-called book town, with a collection of some 250 000 volumes! Interested anyone?
After lunch there is a transfer to the end of the valley. Here, in a rather austere landscape, we have a fairly close encounter with an “arm” of the glacier, dramatically hovering above you on the steep mountainside.
Late afternoon we sail out fjord again, aiming for the nearby village of Balestrand, where the cruise sadly comes to an end. You will disembark "MS Tollesund" with your guide and together you will wait a few minutes before the express boat arrives from Flåm and picks you up in order to take you back to Bergen.

We feel certain that your two days with us will give you an experience out of the ordinary and memories to last you a lifetime.

Welcome on board!

Please note that we also offer travel assistance should you wish to stay in the fjord region and perhaps connect with the Flam Railway the following day. Go to Pre or post cruise for suggestions.
